Dr. Tamer Wassef, MD

Dr. Tamer Wassef is a board-certified psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist with more than 15 years of experience in behavioral healthcare, addiction treatment, and psychiatric medicine. As Medical Director at Right Choice Recovery, Dr. Wassef brings extensive clinical expertise and medical leadership to the treatment of substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Wassef holds board certifications in general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). His clinical background encompasses addiction medicine, medical detoxification, inpatient psychiatric care, eating disorder treatment, and the management of complex mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.

Throughout his career, Dr. Wassef has held numerous leadership positions across hospital-based psychiatric services and specialized behavioral health treatment programs. He previously served as Medical Director of an acute inpatient psychiatric unit and medical detoxification unit at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he also served as Acting Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. His professional experience also includes leadership of the Eating Disorder Unit at Princeton University Medical Center and behavioral health services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.

Dr. Wassef completed advanced fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania, further strengthening his expertise in addiction psychiatry and the treatment of complex psychiatric conditions. Beyond his clinical and executive responsibilities, he has contributed to psychiatric research and education through published journal articles and national lectures addressing eating disorders, substance use treatment, chronic pain management in chemically dependent patients, and treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions.

His approach to psychiatric care emphasizes the connection between mental and physical health, individualized treatment planning, and collaboration among multidisciplinary clinical teams. He recognizes the importance of addressing underlying psychiatric conditions alongside substance use disorders to support comprehensive treatment and long-term recovery.
